Gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue in the chest area in men. It is common and most often entirely benign, but by making the chest line look fuller it can affect how comfortable a person feels. Gynecomastia surgery aims to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest appearance by removing the excess gland and/or fat tissue.
What causes gynecomastia?
In most cases the underlying cause is changes in hormonal balance; temporary enlargement is especially common during puberty, and some of it regresses on its own. Weight gain, certain medications or particular health conditions can also contribute. For this reason, it is important to check before surgery whether there is an underlying cause that needs to be evaluated.
Does it go away with diet and exercise?
This depends on the type of tissue. If the enlargement is mainly due to fat tissue, losing weight can help in part. However, if true gland (breast) tissue is involved, this tissue does not disappear with diet and exercise; in that case the lasting solution is usually surgery. The distinction between the two is made by examination.
How is it performed?
The method is determined by the structure of the tissue. If there is mainly fat, the excess fat is removed with liposuction. If there is firm gland tissue, it is usually removed through a small incision at the edge of the nipple. Often the two methods are used together; the aim is both to reduce the volume and to leave the chest line smooth and natural.
Who is it suitable for?
People who are bothered by fullness in the chest area, who have largely stabilized their weight, are in suitable general health and have realistic expectations can be evaluated. It is important to check beforehand whether there is a hormonal or medical cause underlying the enlargement. A realistic expectation is an important part of the process.
Will there be a scar?
The incisions are small and placed in hidden areas as much as possible, usually at the edge of the nipple, so the scars become indistinct over time. In cases where only liposuction is performed, the cannula entry points are very small. The final appearance of the scar varies according to skin structure and healing.
What is the recovery process like?
After the procedure a compression garment (vest) is worn for a while; swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks and subside over time. Most people return to daily life within about 1 week; heavy sports and activities that strain the chest muscles are postponed for a few weeks. The chest line settling completely and the final result becoming apparent can take a few months.
Is the result permanent?
The gland tissue that is removed does not come back. However, significant weight gain, the use of certain medications or hormonal changes can lead to renewed enlargement. For this reason, a balanced lifestyle and control of the underlying causes are important in maintaining the result.
