What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of glandular breast tissue in men; the appearance caused by increased fat is called pseudogynecomastia. Before surgery, the cause of the enlargement (hormonal, medication, etc.) is assessed; when necessary, further investigation is requested.
In which cases is it preferred?
- Breast enlargement caused by hormonal, genetic or weight changes
- Physical discomfort and the discomfort experienced during sports
- Gaining confidence in choosing clothes and in social life
Surgical technique
- Liposuction: aspiration of fat through small incisions.
- Gland excision: removal of the firm tissue through a crescent incision beneath the nipple.
- Skin tightening: added where necessary.
General anesthesia; liposuction 1–1.5 hours, lift ~2 hours. 1-night stay, 4–8 weeks of compression garment, return to daily activity in 5–7 days.
If the underlying cause has been eliminated and weight is maintained, the likelihood of recurrence is low; however, it may develop again if hormonal changes or medication use continue.
It is mostly limited to a small scar at the edge of the areola.
