Liposuction: The Process and What to Know

Body ContouringOp. Dr. Yasemin Aydınlı·6 min read

Liposuction is a surgery performed to shape the body's contours by reducing stubborn fat deposits in certain areas that do not go away with diet and exercise. An important point is this: liposuction is not a weight-loss method or a treatment for obesity; the aim is not to lower weight but to improve proportion and shape.

What is liposuction done for?

It targets fat deposits that look out of proportion with the person's overall weight in areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, back, inner and outer thighs, arms or under the chin. These areas are often points that resist regular diet and exercise. The aim is to achieve a balanced contour that suits the body's own structure.

Who is it suitable for?

People who are close to their ideal weight, have reasonable skin elasticity and realistic expectations can be evaluated. Skin elasticity is important, because the skin recovering after fat is removed is an expected step. Suitability is determined by considering general health, the target area and skin quality together. Liposuction should not be thought of as a solution for a weight problem or obesity.

How is it performed?

The procedure is carried out through very small entry points into the target area using a thin cannula (tube); the excess fat is removed by controlled vacuuming. There are different techniques (for example, the use of fluid that helps reduce swelling and bleeding); which approach is suitable is determined according to the area and the person.

Does it cause weight loss, and is it permanent?

Liposuction is not done for a large change on the scale; its effect is seen not on the scale but in the body's contours. The removed fat cells do not come back; however, if significant weight is gained afterwards, the remaining cells in the area can enlarge. For this reason, the permanence of the result is closely related to maintaining a stable weight.

What is the recovery process like?

After the procedure a compression garment (corset) is worn for a while; in the first weeks swelling and bruising are normal and subside over time. Most people return to daily life at around 1 week; heavy activities are postponed for a few weeks. The swelling fully going down and the final contour becoming apparent can take a few months.

Will there be a visible scar?

The cannula entry points are very small and are placed in hidden areas as much as possible; in the vast majority of cases these marks become indistinct over time. Even so, scar formation also depends on individual skin structure.

Cellulite and the skin surface

Liposuction primarily targets volume and contour; it is not a direct solution for cellulite or irregularities on the skin surface. In some people the skin's appearance may change partially, but this cannot be guaranteed and depends on skin elasticity.
