What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?

Breast SurgeryOp. Dr. Yasemin Aydınlı·6 min read

A breast lift (medically mastopexy ) is a surgical procedure that raises a sagging breast and gives it a more lifted, balanced and youthful appearance. The aim is to correct the position without noticeably changing the size of the breast, and to move the nipple to the correct place.

Why do breasts sag?

Breast sagging (ptosis) occurs over time as the breast's internal support tissue and the skin lose their elasticity. The main factors are pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight changes, ageing, gravity and genetics. During this process the breast volume shifts to the lower part and the nipple can sit lower.

Who is a breast lift suitable for?

In general, a suitable candidate is someone who feels their breasts are sagging, whose nipple sits near or below the lower border of the breast, who wants a firmer, more lifted appearance and who has realistic expectations. For those planning a pregnancy, since the planned birth and breastfeeding can reshape the breast again, assessment after completing that process is often recommended. Suitability is determined by evaluating the personal examination, breast structure, skin quality and general health together.

What a breast lift does and does not do

Will there be a scar?

Scarring is inevitable with mastopexy. The shape and length of the scar depend on the degree of sagging, skin quality and the technique used. Scars are usually around the areola, vertical when needed, and in some cases in the inframammary fold. They can be more visible in the first months and tend to fade over time, but they are not expected to disappear completely.

Does it affect breastfeeding?

With modern techniques the blood supply to the nipple and the milk ducts are preserved as much as possible. Even so, breastfeeding capacity may change; that is why it is important for patients planning a pregnancy to discuss this in detail before surgery.

What is the recovery process like?

The typical course varies from person to person: in the first week mild swelling and tightness are normal and a support bra is used; most patients return to daily life within 1–2 weeks; heavy sport and strenuous activities start gradually at 4–6 weeks; the settled, final result becomes clear over a few months.

What should I consider when choosing the right surgeon?
