Is Breast Reduction Surgery Only an Aesthetic Procedure?

Breast SurgeryOp. Dr. Yasemin Aydınlı·5 min read

Breast reduction surgery is often thought of in society as a procedure performed solely for aesthetic purposes. However, excessively large breasts can cause problems that affect daily life, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, rashes under the breast, difficulty during exercise, and challenges in clothing selection.

What Complaints Can Large Breasts Cause?

Excessive breast size, known as macromastia or breast hypertrophy, can cause significant problems in some individuals that are not only related to appearance but also to physical comfort. Neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, deep grooves on the shoulders from bra straps, sweating and rashes under the breasts, difficulty during exercise, and posture problems may be among these complaints.

Do Pains Decrease After Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery reduces the weight of the breast tissue and reshapes the breast. This can reduce the mechanical load on the shoulder, neck, and back areas. Many patients report being able to perform their daily activities more comfortably after surgery. However, since the cause of pain is not always solely breast size, results may vary from person to person.

Who May Be Suitable for Breast Reduction Surgery?

Individuals who have large breasts affecting their daily life, experience neck-back-shoulder pain, frequently develop rashes and irritation under the breasts, have difficulty exercising, or face challenges in clothing selection due to breast size may be considered for breast reduction surgery. The eligibility decision is made by jointly evaluating personal examination, breast structure, general health status, and expectations.

Do Scars Remain After Breast Reduction?

Scarring is inevitable in breast reduction surgery. The shape and length of the scar may vary depending on the size of the breast, skin quality, the surgical technique used, and the individual's wound healing characteristics. Scars may be more noticeable in the first months; they generally tend to fade over time, but complete disappearance should not be expected.

Is Breastfeeding Possible After Breast Reduction?

The breastfeeding situation after breast reduction surgery may vary according to the surgical technique used, the amount of tissue removed, and the individual's anatomical characteristics. In modern techniques, the blood supply to the nipple and the milk ducts are preserved as much as possible. However, since breastfeeding capacity may change, it is important for patients planning pregnancy to discuss this matter in detail before surgery.

Breast reduction surgery is not merely an operation that changes aesthetic appearance. In suitable patients, it can contribute to increased physical comfort, easier daily activities, and improved quality of life. Every surgical procedure should be planned individually; expectations, risks, and possible outcomes should be evaluated in detail before surgery.
